How to clean your makeup brushes

We’ve all heard the horror stories of what a dirty makeup brush can do. I won’t go into detail with it, but Google away and you will get the picture (literally go to images).

As a makeup artist I have a duty of care to make sure my brushes are clean. It is the least glamorous side of being a makeup artist. If I am between clients I will spot clean with my MAC cosmetics brush cleaner. Otherwise, I do the following after every makeup session:

  1. Soak the brush hair in warm water, be careful not to get the handle wet it might ruin your brushes long-term

  2. Lather the brush hair in soap, I’ve been using an olive oil soap lately. It cleans thoroughly and it will last you forever

  3. I use a scrub mat to get in between the hairs, I purchased mine from eBay

  4. Rinse

  5. Repeat the process 2 – 3 times to make sure the bristles are back to their original colour

  6. Final step, wipe down the handle with ISOCOL an alcoholic antiseptic to remove the makeup residue
